Hmm.. David is right, it may be the ogg/vorbis decoder that generate too much 
load, though this is not certain.

Another thing I wanted to ask you is the output backend that you use. Is it 
the native alsa output (output.alsa), or a higher-level one like output.ao ?

Yes indeed. We should be able to tell you more with some verbose logs (use 
set("log.level",5) )
