Well, I would start with the easy assumptions. Are you sure the user that runs 
liquidsoap has access to /dev/dsp ?

You should check the rights on the file /dev/dsp and which user liquidsoap runs 
under.

Usually, you have to add the user to the group "audio" to allow access to the 
soundcard.
