Running configure as root has messed up your dev null file. You should
recreate it by doing, as root:
rm /dev/null
mknod /dev/null c 1 3
chmod 666 /dev/null

Another thing: I'm not sure what you mean by downloading the beta2
using mercurial.. You should download the tarball using our sf.net
download page:
