By "hangs up" you probably mean that it issues a type error. This is because you're plugging a stereo source to a mono output. You need to use an explicit conversion here: output.file(%mp3(mono=true),"blah",mean(source)). The reason why it is explicit is that there is a choice: here I used a combination (mean) of the two channels into one, but you could want to drop the right channel and keep the left one.
