Hi,
Yes, I've been using the opus codec and it works very well.
Dennis, to answer your question - it's used at one installation to transmit
the main studio audio to a remote FM transmitter. The latency is slightly
less than one second (hence my interest). I would normally use uncompressed
RTP audio but the private link between the sites isn't always 100% and opus
gives us extra resilience (and reduced bandwidth). The studio runs output.
harbor, with the transmitter site pulling the audio. There's lots of other
options here but, for the moment, what we have works very well.
I also use it for remote programming into the studio. This uses
input.harborat the studio. Latency, again, is around one second and
it's very reliable
(even though we're using domestic internet connections at both ends). I mix
the remote and local sources and it can seamlessly switch between remote
and local material (news local, programming remote, etc.).
Another, but similar, application is remote receive sites for outside
broadcasts. VHF OB receiver at a remote site, pushing the audio back to the
studio. Using 3G or public access wifi points is hopeless for reliable OBs,
hence the use of good old analogue solutions.
Switching is normally priority based - with the OB site being scheduled to
bring the remote connection up (currently via a cronjob but plan to tie in
with playout system and schedule).
All the webstreams are also fed and transcoded using liquidsoap.
Hope that gives you a bit of insight.
Steve.
