I cannot speak directly to a virtual box, but I have run a radio station
for fun on a machine with no actual sound card.

I used rivendell as the automation software, I used jack with a "dummy"
driver/soundcard. Back then I think I used darkice as the shouter and I
think I was using rotter on that box. These days I have been using
liquidsoap for shouting and have just recently begun using glasscoder for
shouting on some boxes.

I may be able to help with jack if you or Sarah need a few hints.
