I am new to Liquidsoap, actually very new to Icecast2 and broadcasting
period. I've played with on a test server with playlists only and live
production a few months now in a very limited way and I like the
advanced features and I've played with some on my test server. I am a
Linux professional put to the task of supporting and maintaining our
community radio station streaming that is based on Darkice and Icecast2.
The original architect of the system is long gone and all needs
upgraded. When we recently were required to have a secure stream, I
merely setup a new server running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and setup Icecast2
with Liquidsoap from source where I secured Icecast2 with a LE cert and
started streaming using input.http and the existing streams from the
other outdated server. Now that I have been given this task, I need to
upgrade things and would like to get all working on this new server and
then perhaps upgrade the existing server to mirror. All has been running
without one issue since setup albeit only using input.http.
Not sure how to check which version I currently have installed, but I
believe it is 1.0.0 looking at the CHANGES file last entry. I daemonized
using source from Github, but is it best to install the distro package?
I did this on another test server here and it works fine, but it is
1.1.1, not the latest.
I'm sure I'll have more questions going forward, but wanted to find out
more about streaming live broadcast input from an audio card. I see
there is an ALSA plugin via the Ubuntu package, how is that obtained via
source?
Finally, will I need Darkice? I still don't understand the difference,
they both seem like mere clients to Icecast2 so far to me. I am assuming
Liquidsoap can handle the live broadcast input, but still not clear if
this is handle via input.harbor or otherwise. Where the existing server
uses Darkice with a /dev/dsp device that I understand is associated with
the old Linux OSS, I will want to use ALSA? This is the currently
installed audio card using a connected Delta Break Out Box:
$ sudo aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: M66 [M Audio Delta 66], device 0: ICE1712 multi [ICE1712 multi]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
As you can tell, I have a lot of understanding to do, any advice/help is
much appreciated!
