I had this problem on Ubuntu 9.10. Probably your problem is the same as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sawfish/+bug/433358 I've worked around that problem by applying a patch which fixes the problem and rebuilding the sawfish package. I've put some instructions at http://call-with-hopeless-continuation.blogspot.com/2009/11/corrigindo-o-sawfish-no-ubuntu-910.html (in portuguese, but the sequence of commands should be understandable).
