Does your Xnest work? Mine doesn't. Could you test it? Xnest is included in xorg-server so everyone has it (at least in Gentoo).
$ Xnest :1 If it prints some 800x600 window, then it runs. You can kill it. In my case, it crashes immediately, printing: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/TTF/, removing from list! [dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/OTF, removing from list! Couldn't get keyboard. Xnest: xcb_io.c:452: _XReply: Assertion `!dpy->xcb->reply_data' failed. Aborted ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (The first two lines are not critical.) I think it worked for <= 1.5.x. Since I've installed 1.7.6, it crashes. 1.8.x series are almost the same in Xnest, and I don't have time to install 1.9.x now. I've reported the bug to upstream, but little has progressed: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27945 (I may had to report it to Gentoo.) Xephyr is another nested X server, but it doesn't allow keyboard configuration from hal, so useless for me. Xnest is important for me to test things. Thanks beforehand.
