It's been a while to do things this way but isn't "startx" the better command? It calls "xinit" after doing some setup. I used to use .xinitrc in the way you describe but have long since relied on GDM. Taking a fresh look at startx's and xinit's man page now, it looks like .xinitrc is actually optional and one can do: startx sawfish NB, I've not actually tried this. Regards, -Brett.
