Bruijn’s Brush-turkey Aepypodius bruijnii: uplist to Endangered?

Initial MessageMessage #-1

Bruijn’s Brush-turkey (Aepypodius bruijnii) is treated as endemic to Waigeo Island (pending clarification of a tentative report from neighbouring Bantanta Island), eastern Indonesia, and is currently classified as Vulnerable (D1) because it is estimated to have a very small population numbering 600-1,200 individuals. However, fieldwork during October-December 2002 and May-June 2003 by Mauro (2006) informed a global population estimate of 977 mature individuals. Although there are some records from the lowlands, the species appears to be largely restricted to altitudes above 600 m. Ten locations at these altitudes are known, not all of which have confirmed records of the species. However, only three are large enough to potentially hold viable populations: Mt Danai (3,910 ha, 600-950 m), Mnier Hills (1,347 ha, 600-870 m) and Mt Sau Lal (893 ha, 600-970 ha) [note that the species's occurrence in the first two sites has yet to be confirmed, but is very likely]. The remaining sites range from 33 to 255 ha. Mauro (2006) calculated the Extent of Occurrence based on a minimum convex polygon drawn around all known and potential locations to be 751 km2. Within this area, its estimated Area of Occupancy (as defined by IUCN 2001) is apparently not more than 192 km2 (Mauro 2006). All three viable sites are isolated mountain areas that can be considered as separate locations, because each could be impacted by a single threatening process, the most important of which is fire. For example, a single ENSO-induced fire event in 1982 burnt c.20,000 ha around Fofak Bay and degraded 18% of optimum habitat on Mt Sau Lal. Thus, a population decline is inferred as it occurs at lower density in post-fire successional regrowth. Therefore, the species appears to warrant uplisting to Endangered (under criteria B1a+bii,iii,v and B2a+bii,iii,v). Comments on this proposed reclassification are welcomed. Mauro, I.
