NEWSLETTER No.

SA GREAT REGIONAL AWARDS
As you may have heard the Friends have won the 2007 SA Great Regional Award
for Science & Sustainability sponsored by SA Water. We were presented with
the award at a dinner at the Barn Palais on 15 November. As a relatively
small group I believe we can be very proud of this award and feel a good
deal of satisfaction in receiving it. Other nominees included Friends of
Naracoorte Caves and the Old Goal Community Garden. We were presented with a
framed certificate and an engraved glass pear. The award is in no small way
a testament to the hard work and dedication put in by our members, and of
course particularly by our Secretary Maureen Christie.
ENVIROFUND
The Friends of Shorebirds SE has also recently been granted part of the
funding applied for from Envirofund Round 10. These funds are for the
erection of temporary fencing around nests on beaches (as was done
successfully with the Little Tern nest at Danger Point last season) and four
"Hooded Plovers use these beaches" signs. In order to protect as many nests
as possible I would appreciate your help. If you see any nesting activity on
our beaches please let me know as soon as possible. I am interested in any
beach nesting species, particularly Little Terns, Hooded Plovers, Pied
Oystercatchers and Red-capped Plovers. We need to fence off as many nests as
possible to prove whether or not this technique leads to an Increase in the
success rate of birds breeding on high recreation use beaches in our region.
LEG FLAG SIGHTING
In other news David Dadd has reported a sighting at "North survey sight 2"
(in the Coorong) of a Common Greenshank with a black over white flag
combination. This bird was flagged at Chongming Dao, Shanghai, China, some
time since April 2006. This is a distance of approximately 7671 km from the
banding location. This is I believe, the first sighting of an overseas
flagged Common Greenshank in South Australia and certainly the first from
Chongming Dao. There has obviously been a lot more birds flagged overseas in
recent years than was previously the case, so it is well worth keeping your
eyes open when looking at shorebirds anywhere in the region. The chances of
seeing an overseas flagged bird are increasing all the time. It would be
good to get more reports of overseas flagged birds locally while Maureen is
away in north-west Australia!
LITTLE TERN & FAIRY TERNS
The Friends of Shorebirds SE has also received a small grant, to cover
travel costs, for monitoring the population status of Little and Fairy Terns
in the Lower South East of South Australia, as part of the Volunteer Support
Grant scheme of the SA Department for Environment and Heritage. The aim of
this project is to gain information on the numbers and distribution of these
species in our region. There is some speculation that the numbers of both
species may have dropped to an unsustainable level in the region but a
concentrated effort to ascertain their numbers in the area has not
previously been undertaken. We hope to be able to determine numbers of each
species and quantify any breeding activity in the area. This ties in nicely
with the Envirofund project on beach nesting birds mentioned above.
FRIENDS TELESCOPE
The group has also received another grant from the Volunteer Support Grant
scheme of the SA Department for Environment and Heritage, in this case for
the for the purchase of a Spotting Scope for use by Friends members. It is
envisaged that the scope will be used to assist in various activities,
particularly in looking for engraved leg flags on Ruddy Turnstone as part of
the study looking into the site faithfulness of this species. The scope will
probably be held by Maureen and taken into the field on "Dollies" days,
banding field trips, etc.
FORTHCOMING FIELD WORK
Apart from the activities mentioned above we will be conducting the summer
Population Monitoring Project for the Australasian Wader Studies Group early
in 2008 (generally in February). This has previously involved counting
shorebirds on the coast from Green Point to Port MacDonnell and Nene Valley
Cape Banks Lighthouse plus the coastal lakes (Lakes George, St Clair, Eliza,
Hawdon South and Nadzab). This has been a massive effort, mainly undertaken
by Maureen, and we probably need more volunteers if we are to continue to
cover such a large area. Whilst Maureen and myself can cover the coastal
sites, with a small amount of assistance, to continue to count the coastal
lakes twice per year (summer and winter) is probably not sustainable without
more assistance. If you feel you may be able to help I would much appreciate
hearing from you.
