Dear SBI-ers, With counterparts LIPI and BKSDA, Columbidae Conservation is surveying the threatened and endemic birds of Wetar Island in Maluku Tenggara Barat, during a period of about eight (8) field weeks, in this years Dry Season (August-October 2008).
The broad aims of the study are to understand the current status of key threatened and endemic birds, describe current habitat/forest status, and identify conservation priorities. We are seeking expressions of interest from IdOU/SBI members (Indonesian nationals), who wish to act as a counterpart (1 place) on this survey. Project funding will cover all transport and consumables during the survey. We will make available a standard daily allowance. You will be expected to be young, keen and have binoculars, backpack, walking boots and be prepared for extended field survey on a remote island. Experience of field survey on remote islands, particularly in Maluku, in working with Forestry officials, and with local communities would be an advantage. Survey will be by walking and camping. During the study you may be expected to liaise with govt officials such as forestry, help make travel arrangements and other logistical duties as required. Do bird surveys using point counts; use questionnaires to document information on local forest and wildlife use and other wise assist in general bird and field surveys.
