Job title: BIODIVERSITY OFFICER (BO) – BIRD SPECIALIST Location: HARAPAN RAINFOREST (HRF), JAMBI, SUMATRA Department: RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION (R&C) Post holder reports to: HEAD OF RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION (Head R&C) Reporting to post holder: FIELD ASSISTANTS and associated project field staff Start date – As soon as possible Contract – One year contract after evaluation Salary – Competitive; based on qualifications and experience Overall Role To work closely with the Head of R&C and other research staff, including the existing Biodiversity Officers (BOs), to support all aspects of the biodiversity survey, monitoring and training programmes, contributing to the development of a biodiversity inventory and research strategy, including building key research collaborations for HRF. The BO Bird Specialist will lead on all bird project areas, including bird surveys and hornbill nest boxes and ecology studies, but will also support projects led by the other BOs. They will also be expected to assist in organising training activities, seminars and workshops for project staff and external participants. Person Specification Qualifications: • Indonesian nationality with an MSc or equivalent in a relevant subject (e.g. Conservation Biology, Tropical Forest Ecology); or comparable working experience. Experience: • High level of practical experience, and theoretical knowledge, in using a range of methods for surveying and monitoring forest birds • Good general ecological and natural history knowledge in tropical forests gained from personal experience • Specific experience of working in Indonesian forests • Providing training in conservation activities to a range of counterparts • Liaising with local communities on conservation projects Skills/abilities: • Excellent identification skills of forest birds, both by sight and call • Survey design for studying bird populations and ecology • Supervisory and training (e.g. of field staff, government workers and/or University students) • Computing ability to include word-processing, spreadsheet and statistics packages • Good writing and communication skills • Good written and spoken English • Work in remote areas Knowledge: • Tropical forest ecology • Bird survey techniques and ecology Disposition: • Work under own initiative • Operate effectively in basic living conditions Interested candidates should submit a current CV, reference letter from an appropriate source, photograph and covering letter in English to david....@harapanra inforest. org no later than 18th March 2010.
