The following evening, Lim Poh Bee and I returned and got some better ID shots of the bird. There have been several Pond Herons here over the past few months and we believe it is one of these that has changed into breeding plumage. It appears that one or more Javan Pond Herons in breeding plumage have now been reported at this same spot for at least the past four years (Subaraj and others in 2007, Lim Kim Seng and others in 2008, Mick Price in 2009). Mid-March is on the early side for such sightings as most seem to have been late March to early April Some ID shots are attached. It will be interesting to see whether any of the other Pond Herons (either Javan or Chinese) at the canal change their plumage in the next few weeks.
