All populations are under threat from habitat loss caused by conversion of tropical forest to commercial plantations, primarily oil palm, plus illegal logging and mining. The 2010 Volunteer Programme will work in the Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve and Danau Sentarum National Park in Indonesian Borneo. Working as part of a team of up to 12 volunteers, this 6-week programme gives unrivalled experience of essential conservation work in one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Our programme promises exciting opportunities for adventurous individuals to participate in conservation fieldwork that really makes a difference. Orangutan Foundation Volunteer Programme 2010 Project 1: Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve Team 1: 1st May – 12th June OR Team 2: 26th June – 7th August This year’s project is building a boardwalk from Camp Mangkung, a release site for orangutans, built by volunteers in 2008. During the dry season or times of low rain, river access to the Camp is very difficult and so there is a need for a boardwalk to gain access to the site. The boardwalk will be at least 4km in length; constructing this will be your task! There will be chiselling, sawing, nailing and hammering….plus some digging! You may have to build a rest point along the jetty too, so this is no mean feat but crucial to ensure released orangutans can have a life in the wild where they belong. Hopefully volunteers will also get a chance to see ex-captive (and maybe wild) orangutans in their natural habitat. Note: there is NO hands-on contact with orangutans. Project 2: Danau Sentarum National Park Team 1: 18th September – 29th October 2010 is the ‘Year of Biodiversity’ and this programme offers volunteers a unique opportunity to visit the remote area of Danau Sentarum National Park (DSNP). DSNP is a wetland of interconnected lakes surrounded by peat swamp forest in the upper Kapuas river basin, the most threatened habitat remaining for orangutans in Indonesian Borne(Kalimantan). The Sentarum lakes and surrounding peat swamp wetlands are unique in Kalimantan, as they are Borneo’s oldest inland peat swamps at 12,000 years old. This really is the heart of Borneo. Threats in the area are the rapid conversion of orangutan habitat to oil palm plantations, as well as hunting, forest fires and illegal logging. This project will focus on the need for infrastructure, field offices, guard posts and conservation beacons in several critical areas inside the park. The project also seeks to promote eco-tourism for Danau Sentarum National Park and to raise local community awareness on the importance of the area.
