as said, wish I could jump on this DB Saluki, but I've got my hands full
now with one active showing (and attempting to course) Saluki, one
active showing Borzoi male, two active showing/coursing Borzoi bitches,
and two more pups coming late next year (Saluki and Borzoi).
Sadly, yes, many breeds nowdays are bred just for the showring. I sadly
see it in the Borzoi (mostly from one kennel in the East). All breeds of
dogs have suffered from this (Great Danes especially in my opinion).
I've seen many AKC Greyhounds and the ones I have personally seen in
person I would not put on any coursing field- too big, body not built
for tight turns.
No, there are not as many active coursing (LGRA/ASFA/AKC) coursing
Saluki as there are of other breeds. There are not as many breeders of
them either, nor do they breed often. There are breeders who breed just
to one standard, but there are also breeders (like who I got my first
Saluki from and who I'm getting my second one from) who breed to
original "standards" of the breed (would a Beduin own THIS? could THIS
course over miles of desert land and not tire? etc...).
I've even heard arguments over the smooth's VS feather's and how some
people want the smooth to become a seperate breed (think long/short/wire
haired Dashunds).
