A wonderful collection of Books of Hours, on tour from the Morgan Library, was
on exhibit until this past Sunday at the St. Louis Art Museum, where I had the
greyt privilege to see it.

It was inspiring! All those on this list who can get to the J. Paul Getty
Museum in Los Angeles in October this year through January 2006, please, get
thee to the museum!

One of my particularly favorite works (that is, next to the very moving
Farnese Hours illuminated by the legendary master Clovis, which actually had me
in tears! I know, I'm far too sentimental!) is the Hours of Pierre de Bosredont
(ca 1465, Langres, France). He was Grand Prior in the Champagne for the Knights
of Rhodes, and from what I can tell from his prayer book, quite the bon vivant!

He had a particular love for The Hunt and so identified with Hubert of Liege,
patron saint of hunters. In an already charmingly personalized book, he has
within the suffrages section, on facing pages, an image of St. Hubert at the
time of his vision on one side, and himself on a joyous hunt on the other. He
is on horseback, looking quite youthful and jaunty with his stylish hat! He is
surrounded by his lovely hounds. Within the splendid border are more dogs, and
a hawk. It is said that on most of the pages, there are the initials A and P
love knotted together; the initials of he and his wife's first names.

What a darling! I would have been all over "Lucky Pierre" like white on rice!
But, I digress...

I've found the images of these two facing pages in the Morgan Library online
catalog. Let's see if this link works!

Perhaps, if those of us working at the art of illumination were to create Books
of Hours for the Current Middle Ages, we should include some saint appropriate
to the Internet within our suffrages pages! Would the iconography of this saint
include him or her holding a lap-top upon a tray? Would our pilgrimage badges
be tiny pewter mice? But, I digress...
