The difference here from the horses is that no one under the age of
18 can be with a hound unless the parent is with them and the fact
the hounds are kepton a lease at all times and there are supposed to
be muzzles on the hounds when they are being walked and coursed....

No minors are allowed near the horses without a legal guardian. I
have chased many children from the equestrian area whose parents sent
them down to "see the horsies". Horses must be kept under
control/restraint and supervised at all times.

The additional insurance is invoked each time horses are on site to
cover the SCA and it's officers. It does not cover the horse owner or
property owner. An additional insurance "rider" for the property
owner can be added. We also require waivers from anyone getting on a
horse at an event or practice, regardless of if they use a weapon.

Yes, dogs can be dangerous. But horses have teeth, hooves, and 1000+
lbs to back it up. Even if they aren't malicious, you can break bones
and lose your life falling off a horse. I've had bruised toes and
heels just from a friendly *lean* or a misplaced hoofstep. I've seen
spectacular falls into fences because the rider couldn't keep their
balance on a turn at the gallop. A frightened horse can be
destructive of property and anyone that's in the way. And that's all
before we start playing our games with sharp metal tipped weapons.

All animals should be respected and understood for who they are and
what they are capable of. As those in charge of animal activities at
events, it is up to us to evaluate each animal for safety and sanity,
and each owner/rider/handler for responsibility and competency.
