I may be getting a new puppy in 10 weeks plus 63 days... The dam was
just bred. For my next breeding I'm probably looking at around 2 years.
Or actually 2 years and 3 years. As I co-own a whippet bitch that one
breeding will be by one of my boys (she's 18mo now) and the other litter
will be a Saluki litter out of my bitch.

There are many things that you should take into account when getting a
purebred dog of any kind. What are you looking for in a dog. Is it just
a pet? Are you interested in possibly showing? Are you interested in
performance activities (even if just SCA coursing)? Different breeders
have different goals from their breedings. Some breed only for the
conformation ring, others only for performance, others for a ring and
field dog, and others only for pets. Find out what the breeder's goals
are. What is their reputation in their endeavors? Are their dogs a
match for what you want to do? Will they be there for you for the dog's
entire life? There are some who want to maintain control over the dog.
There are others who once the dog leaves their house they couldn't care
less. Best is a person who will work with you, be there for your
questions, and share your successes and sorrows, and always be willing to
take the dog back regardless of any reason. But I do have a caveat for
anyone considering a whippet... They are like Lay's Potato Chips, you
can't have just one!
