That must have been some hamster! Samira Besides being kept for rescue work, the St. Bernard was used as a turnspit dog. The monks at the Hospice needed to feed the travelers going through the pass. In the Early 18th century, the monks started using the St Bernard dog in a "hamster" wheel to turn the cooking spit.
