Hello my friends. There has been lots of talk of greyhounds lately. Here's
more....My name is Anne Soeder in the SCA I am Angelika al Medinah. I live in
Portland OR and I'm a board member of the Greyhound Pets of America Northwest
(GPA-NW). I also foster and have a hound of my own.
As some of you may know the race track here in Portland closed last Dec.
This has made our jobs of placing ex racing greyhounds into homes much harder.
When you read the text below you will understand what is going on. We don't
have as many dogs as we used to to place. Yet the Oregon Racing Commition
(ORC) still governs what we do. We have been told not to bring in retired dogs
from other states, we did and now there is a hearing on Jan 9th.
If anybody would like to help, please send a letter or email to the people
listed below. Any help we can get from as many people as we can would help so
much.
Thank you all for your time, Anne Soeder GPA-NW

Permission to crosspost. Please crosspost as is!

Situation: The Oregon Racing Commission (ORC) is not allowing retired racing
greyhounds outside of Oregon to enter the state to be adopted out as pets. Even
when tracks outside of Oregon close, the Oregon greyhound rescue groups have to
say "no" to helping any out-of-state dogs, while Oregon continues to breed and
train greyhounds--all of whom will race outside of Oregon and need homes one
day. This is unacceptable.

Write-in position statement: It is not fair, reasonable, or appropriate for
the ORC to keep all non-Oregon greyhounds out of Oregon while greyhound rescue
groups in the stae have adoptive homes waiting for dogs.

Goal: If the ORC can be influenced to change their minds--via a public
outcry--a lot more greyhounds from outside the state will get homes!

HURRY! ACT NOW! The hearing in Oregon is January 9!

PLEASE POLITELY WRITE/E-MAIL and/or CALL (you can be direct, but if you're
not polite, it will hurt the greyhounds, and I mean it):

TALKING POINTS -- Please use your own words (remember, please be
professional):
  1) Greyhound Pets of America's Northwest Chapter (GPANW) and other greyhound
groups are used to adopting out 350+ dogs each year. They began to struggle to
fulfill their applications once the Multnomah Greyhound Park track closed in
Oregon. Thus, there is currently more of a demand for greyhounds as pets than
there are available dogs in the state. Many, many more greyhounds outside of
the state could be saved/rescued and given homes, but it's not allowed by ORC.
If this doesn't change, the current adoptable greyhound shortage in Oregon will
continue.
  2) Racing greyhounds go from state to state and sometimes from the U.S. to
other countries. When the dogs are done racing, very few are returned to their
original home state. Organizations like Greyhound Pets of America accept as
many greyhounds from all over into their program to be adopted out. Thus, the
dogs from other states should not be discrimated against and should be allowed
to be adopted out in Oregon.
  3) ORC's policy is not in favor of: a) greyhounds outside of Oregon needing
homes; or b) persons/families in Oregon who'd like to adopt a greyhound. No
other state has such oppressive rules against greyhound adoption.
BOTTOM LINE: Please urge the ORC to reconsider this policy and eliminate this
discrimination from their state. Ask them to do what's in the best interest of
the greyhounds needing homes.
