Uploaded keys again and see that the keys are now correctly referenced  
in the conf file. Restarted apache2 - no errors in the log file... but  
still no https..

confirmed the port is open in the security group for the app role.

tested with a telnet session as follows:

david-allens-computer:~ david$ telnet dev.spartalab.com 443
Trying 75.101.146.228...
telnet: connect to address 75.101.146.228: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
