I'd like to start small, with an app instance as the front end, and
then grow the farm by adding load balancers, database servers,
additional app instances, etc. I'd like to build and test set of
farms in the background while the current farm is running, and have
them ready when it's time to grow. The target domain is the same for
all versions of the farm. I'm wondering what the right approach is to
do this.

It seems as though I can't have more than one application with the
same domain, even if only one is running at a time, so I'll have to
build and test on other domains and then switch them when it's time to
grow. What is the best way to switch a current application to another
domain? Should I shut down the farm before making changes to the
application domain settings? What is the most efficient and reliable
sequence to switch applications from one farm to another? Should I
try to run more than one farm under the same application, and if so
how to I assign them to different URLs?

Happy holidays,

Robert
