"a script that would re-generate /etc/hosts file from /etc/aws/hosts "
I'm struggling with making the internal host names resolve while setting up an application for a domain that is currently hosted elsewhere (I won't move DNS until I know my new Scalr.net environment is working properly). I think your suggested solution would solve this issue. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to write that script, but I'd be happy to test it. Anyone?
