I launched a new farm with only a base role. I then logged in and
executed only the following command:

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y

I then added a new role based on this instance. I see the image being
built in /mnt and have the following in the event log.

Uploading image to farm-3-xxxxxx/Hardy-Updated-2009-01-21-1549 (0
try).
Patching configs.
Creating image.
Truncating log files.
Upload to: farm-3-xxxxxxx/Hardy-Updated-2009-01-21-1549
Received rebundle trap from Scalr. (New role: Hardy-Updated).
No scripts to execute on event 'hostUp'.
Received INIT trap from UDP: [174.129.243.201]:32770 Finishing host
start-up.

The image never gets uploaded to S3. I've been playing with security
groups and trying a lot of different things to no avail. So, I
decided to start a new farm with only a base role and then create a
new role without any changes. This succeeded.

Can someone please shed some light on this? I saw something in the
discussion about s3cmd getting upgraded and causing a problem. Is it
not possible to do an apt-get upgrade or do I just need to exclude
specific packages? Is this documented somewhere and I just missed
it? Is there any comprehensive guide to rolling your own roles?

Muchas gracias.
