Synchronized instance remains fully functional during all the process of synchronization. But this process is resource-hungry, so be ready the load average will grow up on this instance and things will become not so smooth as always. After the synchronization is completed, an instance is launched using the new AMI. The old instance on which you have launched synchronization process then goes down.
