Hi Jeremy, Spare instances is the sum of all 'Max instances' for all roles enabled on your farms. An idea is that when you start your farms, this sum should be not more than the number of instances you are allowed to launch on EC2 by Amazon. Otherwise, Scalr will be confused during scaling.
