I had the same issue on rrd graphs. It used to display an error. I don't 
remember exactly where but there is a java script snippet that displays the 
error. I just commented the if () and removed the else part and tried to 
display charts always and it worked. 

On the autoscaling search the forums, someone else had a problem similar.
