Indeed, a programmer ought to be able to rely on the ``hygiene'' and  
``referential transparency'' principles throughout the standard forms. It  
is more "inelegant" to me to have varying "specialized" semantics for  
various forms than to have a generic overarching principle of hygiene and  
referential transparency directing the decisions of language  
standardization.
