Well, it depends on where you choose to draw the line between text and what Unicode calls "higher-level protocols" such as markup. There are markup schemes in which even newline and space have no meaning, but it's hard to see why one would want to go so far. The other control characters are on a cline from form feed and horizontal/vertical tabulation down to ^P, synchronous idle (sent on synchronous connections when it is necessary to keep sending to maintain framing, but there is nothing to send). -- Schlingt dreifach einen Kreis vom dies!
