It doesn't look like we can do much meaningful work on the Attendance UI without doing at least a simple workflow for resolving excused and unexcused absences & tardies.
Here's what I've come up with. I'm shooting for the simplest thing that could possibly work. If a student is not in attendance, create an unexcused absence at the beginning of the class/day. If the student arrives late, the absence becomes an unexcused tardy. The absence or tardy can be excused by actions by clerks, school administrators or (in some cases) teachers, thus ending the workflow.
