We do attendance on the computer every period of every day, and I find
it much easier than a paper and pencil solution. We are using a program
called "Easy Grade Pro". While I am not a big fan of EGP in general (it
is non-free software that runs only on Windoz), the ability to select a
"seating chart" view and to take attendance on the seating chart is
extremely helpful.

That "seating chart" is probably something to keep in mind. I have also
seen it in a resource management application, i.e. you can choose
different "seating layouts" (Circle, U-Shape, ...) for each room. And of
course you can change the seating layout for each location for a
particular time slot.

Can anyone else attest the usefulness/ necessity of this?

I've never seen this before, but I can tell you that if I put it in front of the teachers here you'd probably get a range of responses. I'm sure it's something that would be very usefull, if you have the rooms and the room capacity entered into your management app, then this would be the next logical step.

One issue that you may run into is that some teachers move the furniture around in the room, depending on what
they are doing.
