It's possible I missed that. I really need to set all this up myself and
test it.
None of the students are highlighted if they have no attendance
records for that day, which is most probably the case on our demo
server. Student is not absent/present until someone marks him that way
when tracking attendance for his section.

I couldn't see a way to do this on the demo site. Just so it's clear, I
logged in with teacher001 and used the "attendance" links within the
calendar. I'm using firefox on linux.
Maybe you were looking at a section that has ended more than 1 hour
ago and seeing a RetroactiveAttendance form ?
I might explain the roles used in some Irish schools in case it's helpful:
1. Certain teachers are assigned as form teachers for a single class of
students. They then call the roll for those students first thing in the
morning (as well as looking after some other disciplinary issues, etc).
2. If students are late for roll call, they must then report to the House
Master before going to class. The house master (being something of an
ogre) may then take the opportunity to berate the student for their
tardiness. He is generally the only person who adds lates to the roll.
There is a view for the ogre guy it's called "Attendance Control
Panel" you can look up any student in there and manage his
absences/tardies. So one would go to the panel, find the student,
yell at student, go to students attendance view, mark the "homeroom
absence" in question, set it to tardy, let the student go.
