"Maps, Mental Models And Applications"

Leon Trilling, Michael Stiefel, and Wesley Harris

MIT, 2-105

Abstract
Communication, whether in human conversation, a scientific experiment or a work of art, is an intermediary between the originator and the recipient's mental model. People make mental models not just because they are useful; they make them because that is the way people think. These models are often implicit, and are always incomplete. Our seminar will be devoted to discussing the evidence that humans think this way, how artifacts extend the range of mental models, and the implications in diverse areas such as engineering, cultural understanding and the arts.
