'Wilding the Farm or Farming the Wild'? The Evolution of Game Ranching in Southern Africa, 1960s to the Present

Jane Carruthers
Professor of History, University of South Africa, Pretoria

Before 1960, it had been assumed that in order for modern agriculture to prosper, the wildlife of Africa should be exterminated to make way for domestic livestock. This paper explains how scientists involved in animal husbandry collaborated with wildlife managers in exploring the potential for farming wildlife for food production. Together with ecotourism and hunting, this development has resulted in increased numbers so that there are larger wildlife populations in South Africa today than there were a century ago, much of them on private property. To explain these shifts, the paper will examine the role of governmental bureaucracy and of private landowners, as well as the longer historical context of wildlife utilization in South Africa.
