Hello all,

I'm very pleased to announce that Sheila Jasanoff will be joining STS for
this coming spring ('09) term as a Distinguished Visiting Professor. Most of
you I'm sure are familiar with Sheila's work as a Professor of Science and
Technology Studies at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and with her
many publications as a leading expert in the area of law, politics, and
policy in democracies, particularly in the context of globalization. Sheila
also founded the STS program at Cornell, a close sister program to ours.

During her term at STS, Sheila will teach a graduate course "Expertise and
Democracy in Science and Technology Policy," which I encourage all of our
students to take (likely time is Wednesday 1-4pm). The course will fill a
much needed role on our campus for an STS-inflected course on S&T policy.
Sheila will also present a colloquium on her research, be available to
informally advise graduate students, and participate in conversations with
us about the future vision of the program.

I am very pleased about the prospect of Sheila's visit and much look forward
to her presence at STS.

Stay tuned for more details as the spring term approaches,

d
