Great pictures, David! Also impressive is the sparkling cleanness of the machinery -- reminds me of the wonderful new Koch Technology Museum in Istanbul. I love the idea of their makers being like our hackers. It would make a wonderful informal colloquium or brown bag talk to show these pictures with some more elaboration of the incremental steps of hacking ideas and previous machines in order to create new ones, and the relation between hacking and macro modernist visions (as with the caption about the Brunel drawing re fast trains to London).
