Hello Sci-Tech-ers - Tomorrow Dr. Emad Khalil of Alexandria University, Egypt, will present a seminar at MIT on underwater archaeology in Egypt. Dr. Khalil is the Arab world's first PhD in Maritime Archaeology, and he has established an academic degree and certificate program in that field at his institution. This week marks his first visit to the USA, a trip sponsored by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
His seminar will be Wednesday May 13 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in E51-095. ----------- "Underwater Archaeology in Egypt: past, present and future" Egypt's rich maritime history has left an array of archaeological remains; yet, scholars around the world know little about the ships, harbours, and routes which helped maintain Egypt's connection with other lands and people. This presentation will discuss the major early and present underwater archaeological projects in Egypt, including excavation of the submerged remains of the ancient lighthouse of Pharos and an 18th century shipwreck in the Red Sea. It will also present some of the current issues related to the investigation and preservation of Egypt's underwater cultural heritage, and the newly formed Alexandria University-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution partnership for underwater archaeology. ----------- We look forward to seeing you, and please forward this message to anyone else who may be interested in attending Dr. Khalil's seminar.
