"'Pilgrims of the Vertical': Rethinking Gender Analysis in Environmental
History"

Joseph E. Taylor III
Simon Fraser University and University of Portland

Taylor's forthcoming Pilgrims of the Vertical: Yosemite Rock Climbers and
Nature at Risk recounts the history of Yosemite Valley's globally significant
rock climbing scene. Beyond the thrills offered by Yosemite's walls, however,
this story draws telling links between sport, environmental values, and
consumerism. Climbing history also offers an important corrective to the way
environmental historians have thought about gender analysis within the field.
Taylor will focus on the earliest period of modern technical climbing in
Yosemite in order to suggest that paying greater attention to the social
contexts within which gender was performed offers a fruitful path for future
work.
