Scid has some limitation for the length of commentaries. I wonder if you 
just hit that one. 30k is near at the limit.

Are you sure about this point? While ago Pascal increased the size limit 
quite a bit to allow for longer commentary. This function is at least 
active in 4.2.2 and cvs. It indeed solved some problems I had 
experienced myself with two heavily annotated CC games.
