Yup, I'd tried removing the offending comment, but it just hangs on the
next comment with ... in it - this time, instead of the error being

l.44    9.&..&
               9...Ne4 \\

Without that comment it is:

l.49   12.&...&
              Bxf3 \\

The error occurs when the next move is Black's, i.e. the three full
stops to denote Black's move, 9...Ne4 or 12...Bxf3.

Attached the pgn (which it exports fine).

Is this a problem with a newer version of Tex? (I'm running Debian
Squeeze, and Tex is fine for other things - just did a quick non-chess
bit of text and it generated it fine.)
