Yes it is, and it does. You forget to mention one thing, the "use book" checkmark and the file name in the box below it. If you remove the checkmark, no "opening errors" can be reported and the engine will start calculating from the start position - regardless of whether this is the Initial Position at move 1 or not. The "Find opening errors" option is quite useful to test a bunch of games against a certain opening repertoire. This means that (only!) this repertoire is/should-be in the "book" that you specify. In this case the word "error" is debatable. Indeed it is. I do agree that the option is not useful if you only have a small and lousy book that attempts to cover all "correct" opening moves. In this case (only) the book checkmark can be enabled to save some - usually nonsense - calculation time by the engine in the beginning of the game.
