Greetings! A question about the output of Scid (I am using version
4.6.4). When analyzing a game in Scid with some chess engine, it
outputs evaluations of moves, and when the move is judged suboptimal,
it also gives an alternative move with its evaluation in parentheses.
Sometimes, however, it gives an alternative move in parentheses with
a WORSE evaluation than the move actually played. For example,
analyzing the Wesley So vs. Magnus Carlsen game of 2017.08.06
(http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1883634), on Carlsen's
move 7...d6, the Stockfish analysis to depth 46 is +0.52; however,
Scid also prints in parentheses the alternative move 7...Nf6 with
the evaluation to depth 45 of +0.61 (plus the principal variation for
7...Nf6). The evaluations are from White's perspective, so 7...Nf6
is being evaluated as a slightly inferior move for Black than 7...d6.
Why would Scid print an inferior alternative move at all? Is it possibly
because 7...Nf6 was the engine's recommendation before Black's 7th move
whereas the engine's evaluation of 7...d6 occurred one ply later?

Regards,
Greg
