Bruno,

With a game loaded, it will normally start with all the pieces and pawns
on their original positions (there are ways to change that, using
bookmarks, but don't worry about them for now). I don't see what is
weird about that - most people start looking at a game from the start,
not from the end.

There are 4 keys you can use to navigate in the games.

The end key as you found also takes you to the end. Up/Down arrows move
forward/backward 10 half-moves.

It would be worth your while practicing with a small database that has
previously been created, so you can see multiple games, list the games,
sort games etc. There is a small one (just over 2000 games with the
Smith-Morra gambit) at

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/chessdb/smith-morra-games.zip?use_mirror=osdn

Just unzip it, and open one of the files.

Then you should try creating your own from a PGN file.

There are a few things about Scid and ChessDB that are perhaps not too
intuitive. (For example, moves get saved to a database - there is
nothing on the menu to save a database, only a game). You just have to
get used to them. T

There's a tutorial at

http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/tutorial/

which is a lot more complete than the one on the Scid site.
