The engine should not crash ... I tried with various ones (even through
wine), and I don't get any problem.

Variations can be stripped through menu "edit->strip" or by right clicking
in the PGN window.
The process is to enter all variations you think about then compare with the
various lines considered by the engine. This is not designed to be an
iterative process.
Concerning engine crash, there is no useful log and various debugging "puts"
should be put in code (but if the engine segfaults ...).
