Right. I build it on my alpha from time to time as well and
I have to distingish the i686 and axp versions ;)

Absolutely no problem. The easiest way is to just switch off
the platform extension in the makefile.

I never did any autoconf-stuff and actually, it is just
overkill. I think just adopting
PLATFORM := $(shell uname -m | sed -e 's/ //g')¬
to be an emtpy string is sufficient.
