You'll notice that you got a lot of new themes with libtk-img.

Difference between merida1 and 2 are mainly if you want a "glow" around 
your pieces. Also the Fantasy and Kingdom sets look pretty nice. Eboard 
would be ok as well, but it has the problem that the input does not know 
  a real alpha channel so the edges look ugly there at large sizes. 
Unfortunately, I've no better input bitmaps otherwise I'd have 
considered to replace it.

Well, I fear only in my favourite place. (Changelog for 3.6.21.) The bad 
thing is: how to document it as they just do not show up if you don't 
have the libtk-img. And there is no need to say anything about it if you 
have this lib.
