Closed source is always a bad thing, as we can see again.

Still, as it seems to be a pretty good engine for playing. I was told by many 
people that they favour it for it's style. Given the fact that the issue is 
only a minor thing and as far as I understood it ProDeo as such is "sort of" 
xboard compatible and the UCI-interface is only a small addon exe that calls 
prodeo in the background...

Couldn't someone on the win-platform just write a wrapper that finishes the 
final UCI issues, ie. translate the wrong commands for prodeo?

Something like prodeo_realuci.exe calling prodeo_uci.exe which calls prodeo.exe?

Most likely they have some sort of exception for it included. What I think that 
Pascal wanted to say is that such exceptions make the source quite ugly and 
difficult to keep up to date. For a dead engine this is a point to consider, 
indeed.
