I know this problem and I'm working on a solution. In advance
(only Ubuntu 11.10 is affected):

1. The pre-installed compiler version 4.6 seems to be insane.
   It's recommended to install g++-4.4.

2. The pre-installed Tk library version 8.5.10 is instable. It's
   recommended to install an earlier Tk version.

3. Scidb has a bug due to an undefined order of static object
   initialization. This problem occurs only on Ubuntu 11.10.

As soon as I have a solution I'll release a new public beta version,
and I will post detailed instructions how to compile a proper version.
On Ubuntu 11.10 this is not possible without some preparation.
